Mumbai, October 13: A 24-year old auorickshaw driver from Ghatkopar chased and nabbed a chain snatcher who was fleeing after the snatching a gold chain of a woman travelling in his autorickshaw.
ON Sunday, Suhasini Ambokar, a resident of Saki Naka, boarded the autorickshaw at Ghatkopar station to go towards Vila Parle.
When the autorickshaw reached LBS road, suddenly a person came running towards the autorickshaw and within fraction of seconds snatched Ambokar’s gold chain and fled in a narrow lane.
The autorickshaw driver Sandeep Gupta looked back to check what had happened and came to know that Ambokar’s chain had been snatched. He immediately parked the autorickshaw and ran after the thief.
Within a few minutes, Gupta caught hold of the chain snatcher in a narrow lane nearby and the two grappled with each other. The thief then attacked him with a blade. Gupta defended himself and somehow overpowered the accused and with the help of some localites who had gathered at the spot and handed him over to police.
Police Uttam Kolekar from Ghatkopar police station said: “‘The chain snatcher has been identified as Suhas Dhoke who is a resident of Nityanand Nagar in Ghatkopar. Also we have recovered the gold chain worth Rs80,000 from him. We are checking if he has any past criminal records.”
Gupta works as a depot manager with a logistics firm in Navi Mumbai and drives one of the three autorickshaws owned by his father only on holidays.He said, ”I did what my heart said at that moment. The woman in my autorickshaw was in tears and I wanted to help her.”
