Hyderabad, March 06: Though major reservoirs in the city are brimming close to full capacity levels, denizens are likely to face drinking water shortage in summer as the pumping system is not equipped to draw more water.
Presently, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) supplies 340 millions gallons of water per day (MGD) from the five reservoirs- Singur, Manjira, Akkampally (Krishna), Himayath Sagar and Osman Sagar. However, the daily drinking water demand is expected to increase to about 370-380 MGD during the next three months.
Speaking to Express, Water Board officials said it was not possible to draw additional water from the reservoirs as the pumping system has been designed to pump only up to 340 MGD. Officials said the water pipelines might burst and pumping motors get damaged if any attempt was made to draw more water.
Board officials said they are planning to take up repairs of defunct bore-wells in the twin cities to meet the additional demand.
The HMWS&SB has over 5,000 bore-wells. But with most of them defunct, the Board has decided to take up deep drilling to get adequate water.
Officials added that top priority would be given to the domestic sector and adequate water provided during the summer. If there was a shortage of water supply, they would reduce supplies to the industrial sector on a temporary basis and meet the demand of domestic consumers.
