Drinking mothers risk sons’ fertility

Cairo, July 01: Scientists say that alcohol drinking during pregnancy might damage the future fertility of sons, asking women to think twice before pouring that glass of wine.

Pregnancy drinking habits could affect the would-be sons’ ability to father their own children in the future, Danish researchers told the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology conference in Rome.

The researchers said mothers’ drinking habit give these men a harder time getting their partner pregnant.

In a study of almost 350 young men, the individuals’ sperm counts were reduced by one-third in men whose mothers had drunk more than 4.5 alcoholic drinks per week during pregnancy, compared with those whose mothers had abstained from alcohol.

The study included men, now aged between 18 and 21, whose mothers had taken part in a large study on lifestyle while they were pregnant with them, the researchers told the fertility conference.

Even though the study found a relationship between higher alcohol consumption and lower sperm concentration, the trend and its implications are not completely clear.
