DRI seizes Bangladesh-smuggled gold worth Rs 12 cr

Kolkata: Gold worth over Rs 12 crore smuggled into India from Bangladesh has been seized by DRI officials here.

A team of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) conducted searches at a flat in Beliaghata area. The flat was found to be occupied by a couple.

On thorough search, the DRI officials recovered 354 pieces of gold biscuits of foreign origin weighing 41 kgs, a press release issued today by revenue intelligence agency said.

“All the gold biscuits were bearing foreign markings inscribed on them such as Al Etihad, Dubai and Credit Suisse, Switzerland. Value of the seized gold was calculated to be Rs 12.08 crore,” it said.

The husband admitted his involvement in the smuggling and said that he had received similar type of smuggled gold in the past also for monetary considerations, the release said, adding that the accused was arrested.
