Dredging of Hussainsagar delayed

Hyderabad, January 27: With none of its projects meeting the deadline, Hussainsagar and Catchment Area Improvement Programme is going at a snail’s pace.

In 2005-06, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) started the Rs 310 crore programme to improve the 16th century lake’s water quality and sanitary conditions of the people living in its vicinity.

Construction of sewerage treatment plants, a major component of the programme, scheduled to be completed by January 2011, with an outlay of `100 crore, is so far only 50 percent finished.

Sunil Kumar Gupta, member environment, HMDA says, “They are speeding up the work, due to some technical reasons it got delayed and they are hopeful of finishing the work soon.”

Even the dredging of sediments deposited at mouths of four nalas under the project has got delayed.
