Dr Kalam stresses on confluence of science and agriculture

Guwahati, February 06: Former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam today stressed on the confluence of science, entrepreneurship and agriculture for the development of the agricultural sector of Assam.

”The confluence of science and entrepreneurship can spell rich dividends for the agriculture sector in the state,” Dr Kalam said, after inaugurating a Jan Vigyan Mela at the Pub Kamrup College on the outskirts of the city. Underscoring the rich resources the state is endowed with, he said, ”Assam has vast natural resources, minerals, forest resources and fertile land. It can develop these to stride forward.” He pointed to the revolution in the communication network which could help farmers in employing latest technology for their benefit. ”A farmer at a place with no roads can now use his mobile phone to get updates on the latest technologies in agriculture,” Dr Kalam, known as Indias missile man, said. Pointing that 74 per cent of Assams population was dependant on agriculture and the allied sector, he also highlighted the importance of diversification in the sector. Stressing on the need for employing science for all-round development, the former President said, ”There must be maximum use of technology for coordination of all agencies for complete development.”
