LUCKNOW: Pediatrician Dr. Kafeel Khan, who was arrested in connection with the death of over 30 children in BRD hospital case once again in the headlines.
The Bahraich police on Saturday allegedly detained Dr. Khan after examined the children admitted to the government-run district hospital where at least 71 children died in last 45 days due to deadly fever.
At present, the police took him to the Simbhauli Sugar Mill guesthouse and he is being questioned.
Khan’s brother Adeel Ahmad Khan speaking to media said, “My brother Dr Kafeel Khan has been illegally detained and is held inside the guesthouse of Simbhauli Sugar Mill. I have also been stopped from going inside the mill. My brother’s only crime is that he countered what the doctors here have been saying about a mysterious fever. According to him, the symptoms are quite similar to those of encephalitis,” he said.
The incident comes a year after 60 infants died in Gorakhpur’s Baba Raghav Das (BRD) Medical College, allegedly due to lack of oxygen supply. The hospital authorities, however, denied this claim and said that the infants died due to encephalitis.
It is pertinent to mention that Kafeel Khan was suspended and arrested over charges of corruption and culpable homicide but police later dropped corruption charges for lack of evidence.
After spending eight months in jail, he was granted bail by the Allahabad High Court.
