Porayar (TN), January 07: The carcass of a baby dolphin washed ashore at Chandrapadi fishing hamlet near here in Nagapattinam district today.
The dolphin did not bear any injuries on its body. Local fishermen said the baby might have got separated from its school and drifted towards the shore.
Near the shore, in shallow waters, it might have found it difficult to bear its body weight and subsequently died, they said.
It appeared to be belonging to the long-beaked dolphin variety, found in abundance in the Pacific Ocean and in the Gulf of Mannar, officials said.
Classified as ‘endangered species’, these dolphins are preserved in the Gulf of Mannar.
