Thiruvananthapuram: A seven kg massive tumour has been removed by doctors in the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College from a 45-year-old woman from Pathanapuram.
Retroperitoneal lymphangioma is a rare, benign tumour of the lymphatic system. It took four- hours to remove the tumour by a team of 14 doctors led by Dr G Unnikrishnan, Assistant Professor of the General Surgery Department and Additional Professor Dr P K Thomas of the Medical College hospital on June 11.
She was admitted in the hospital on June 2 and through ultrasound and MRI scans, the extent of the tumour was determined.
The woman had been suffering since the past one year because of the expanding stomach. She was finding it difficult to bend down, breathe, and move around. Detailed examination showed the presence of a tumour which had taken up a considerable part of the stomach. It had pushed her left kidney to the right, stomach and pancreas were pushed up to the anterior abdominal wall and the left descending colon was pushed to the right side.
