Doctor Questioned in Punching Case as Ministry Raises Concern

Ajman, December 07: A doctor is being interrogated by the Ajman Public Prosecution over a case in which a man was allegedly punched and in due course suffered severe eye damage, a senior official said.

The health ministry has expressed concern about the case and said strict legal action should be taken if fault was found. The ministry has said it will bear all costs in Hassan’s treatment.

Imran Hassan, a 22-year-old Emirati, was allegedly punched by a doctor at GMC hospital last Wednesday. Hassan suffered severe damage to his eye and had to go through an operation.

Police detained the doctor, a 62-year-old Indian, and referred him to Ajman Public Prosecution. Tariq Al Rashid, Ajman public prosecutor, on Sunday said the accused would be detained for a further seven days while being interrogated. Al Rashid said it was expected the case would then be referred to court.

Hamad Al Shamsi, director general of Khalifa Hospital said Hassan’s condition was stable and his medical report had been sent to European hospitals.

He will leave for London within two days to visit a clinic there for consultation. Hassan will then travel to a German clinic before making a decision on what option to take.
