Villupuram,Tamil Nadu, January 25:Miscreants hacked to death a DMK functionary and President of Pallavadi Village Panchayat in this district of Tamil Nadu, even the supporters of the deceased set fire to atleast five houses in retaliation and squatted around the body for more than two hours, triggering tension.
Police said the Panchayat President N Kanagasabai, who is also the Ulunthurpet Panahchayat Union DMK functionary was travelling in a two-wheeler with his friend, when a gang, following in a car, waylaid and
hacked him to death.
The car hit the two-wheeler and when both Kanagasabai and his friend fell down, the gang members, armed with deadly weapons, asked his friend to flee and hacked to death the DMK functionary.
The incident took place at Eraiyur late this evening, police said.
As news spread about the murder of Kanagasabai, who is popular in lunthurpet, Thirukovilur and Villupuram areas, his supporters, set fire to five houses of members of a left party, suspecting the party members were behind the murder.
