Diwali Adds Glitter to Dubai

Dubai, October 18: Dubai, the City of Lights, wore a much brighter look on Saturday with thousands of Indian expatriates celebrating Diwali, the festival of lights, by lighting up rows of lanterns and lamps inside and outside their houses, shops and offices.

One major part of the festival that was missing from households was the non-stop sound of firecrackers because of the local safety regulations.

The festival, which is considered as the most auspicious time of the year for Hindus, Sikhs and Jains all alike, also literally added sweetness to the weekend as Diwali special mithais (sweets) were prepared and shared by all those who celebrate the five-day-long festival.

The third day of the festival, the most important of the five days, saw many community groups and associations organising various events since it fell on a holiday. The Diwali shopping spree saw thousands flocking to jewellery showrooms, garment shops and sweet shops during the entire week.
