Due to the convenience it offers, the market, in general become quite popular for these plastic, thermocol, paper cups.
These disposable cups are actually proved hazardous to health leading to various health ailments. It may even cause 52 types of cancer.
To prevent seeping, the manufacturers coat these cups with a tiny layer of wax and as you pour tea or coffee and take a sip of your favourite hot beverages, you may also consume some wax from these disposable cups.
According to experts, the acid in the stomach usually discard minor amounts; however, if it is accumulated in large amounts, it may cause an obstruction in the intestines.
“A thin coat of wax is sprayed during the manufacturing process. Polythene and paraffin are used to uphold the durability of the product by obstructing the paper from absorbing the liquid. There are defined guidelines for the preparation of paper cups – the thickness of the wax layer should be minimal, and when the product is soaked in water, it should not release any toxic liquid. However, most manufacturers ignore the standards and products reach retailers without clearing quality checks,” says a scientist from the Polymers and Functional Materials Division of the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, reported Deccan Chronicle.
So it would be suggested to avoid taking coffee or tea in such cups and have your favourite hot beverages in ceramic mug or glass cups or even in ordinary stainless steel glass.
