Discrimination against Muslim even at the highest level in education

After Mumbai’s MBA graduate Zeeshan Khan, who recently hogged national headlines after he was denied a job because of being a Muslim, one more Muslim youth alleged that he was deprived of a doctoral seat in a government Medical College just because of his religious identity. The case is more shocking because it happened in government institution as the Constitution of India strictly debarred any discrimination on the basis of religion, caste and creed.

According to details, one Dr Manazir Iqbal has secured first position in the Entrance of Examination {Theory) for Admission to D.M. (cardiology) In the Guwhati Medical College, Guwhati but he was pushed to six positions after the practical examination.

A dejected Dr Iqbal told the Muslim Mirror, that he is doctor by profession and appeared for DM cardiology entrance examination and topped the list of successful candidates with 87.67 marks out of 110. The entrance examination was conducted by Guwahati Medical College. But to utter my dismay, I got only 34 marks out of 90 in practical examination while one Alok Sharma who got only 83.33 marks in theory got first position by virtue of practical exam marks, he said.

There were only two seats for DM cardiology in the College and Dr Iqbal was confident that he would secure one seat by his sheer hard work. However, his dream was shattered when the final result came out and he was placed at 6th position.

“See how things are sold for money in India, as no CBI, no MCI, and no organization is there to check this corruption and malaise” a thoroughly dejected Iqbal said.

“I am frustrated. My family is sad and depressed,” he said.

Like the Zeeshan’s story, Iqbal’s issue may snowball into a major controversy as the case is doing round in Assam and other part of the North east of the country.

If there is any truth in Dr Iqbal’s allegations then it is a serious matter as it is one of the reasons of falling educational standard in the country. The Assam’s education department should set up an inquiry into the matter.
