‘Discipline is an act of love’

Parents should not succumb to emotional blackmail by their children and should put their foot down if need be to instil discipline in them.

“Discipline is an act of love… Instilling discipline in children is the true duty of a parent for discipline is what defines a person’s character,” noted motivational speaker Shiv Khera said here Saturday. “For every child abuse today, there are 10 children who are blackmailing their parents.” He was addressing a Positive Parenting workshop organised by Oakridge International School. Mind is like a garden. If you plant good seeds, you will have a good garden. “Goodness has to be taught,” he said drawing an analogy. “Only parents and teachers in life care to correct. The world punishes.”

“When we buy a VCR or a VCD, it comes with a manual. When a child is born, they come without a manual,” he said explaining the challenge in parenting. “Parents are their manual.” And while happiness is crucial, source of happiness is even more important, Mr. Khera stressed. “If a child finds happiness in stealing it is not right.”

And it is important to teach them self worth, which is more important than self wealth.

“There are many examples of successful people like Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley who were very successful but were bleeding inside.”
