The director of the Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology Dr M Vijayakumar was suspended in anticipation of investigation following allegations of a multi-crore drug purchase scam.
Dr M Vijayakumar is accused of purchasing medicines worth Rs 30 crore without floating the de rigueur tender. There are also finger pointing that he purchased equipment and ordered civil works without following the norms. He also furnished fake information in his curriculum vitae.
An internal inquiry was ordered in July 2013. The report was submitted a short time ago following which the government directed the medical education department to instigate action. The suspension order was issued on February 3, 2014.
The 41-year-old institute on Hosur Road gets cancer patients coming from all over the city and state in addition to neighbouring states.
