‘Dilwale’ is a risk for my career: Varun Dhawan

Actor Varun Dhawan says being a part of Shah Rukh Khan-Kajol starrer “Dilwale” is not a risk-free move for his career as it demanded a lot of hardwork to make his presence felt in the movie.

“Dilwale”, which released yesterday, is getting a lukewarm response at the box office. It also stars Kriti Sanon, Varun Sharma, Boman Irani, Johnny Lever and Sanjay Mishra in pivotal roles.

“I don’t make safe decisions. ‘Dilwale’ is also a risk for me in my career because if I am good in the film then only I will be seen.

“Otherwise it’s very easy for me to get overshadowed because of the sheer star power not only of Shah Rukh and Kajol but also of Johnny Lever, Sanjay Mishra and Boman Irani. These guys are veterans,” Varun told PTI.

The “Badlapur” actor said it was his dream to be a part of a masala entertainer and director Rohit Shetty had given him enough chance to perform in the movie.

“I love films like ‘Dilwale’. I love family films, where you laugh, cry, see good actions, visuals and listen to good songs. I have always loved watching these films like an audience. I always wanted to be a part of one of them. This movie had enough meat and masala for me to perform.”

The 28-year-old actor, who is the son of veteran filmmaker David Dhawan, said his father is an admirer of Shetty’s mass entertainers.

“My dad is a Rohit Shetty fan. He thinks Rohit sir is an amazing director. His success rate is something which is untouched in this industry… More than any of my films, dad is looking forward to ‘Dilwale’ because I am doing comedy in the film. It’s a test for me whether I shine or not,” he said.

Despite getting a dream start in Bollywood, Varun says his filmy background did not earn him movies as he had to wait for a year for his second film.

“I started off my career with ‘Student of the Year’. While my costars Sidharth (Malhotra) and Alia (Bhatt) were already shooting for their next projects, I was sitting at home for one year. The first film I signed was ‘Badlapur’ then ‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania’ followed by ‘Main Tera…’ and ‘ABCD 2’.”

Post “Dilwale,” the actor will be seen in brother Rohit Dhawan directed action-adventure drama “Dishoom”, which also stars John Abraham and Jacqueline Fernandez.
