DIG orders to expedite arrest of absconding accused in riots

With the Supreme Court directing proper investigation in riot cases, a top police official has ordered his force to expedite efforts to arrest absconding accused in connection with riots in Muzaffarnagar and Shamli.

Presiding over a meeting of police officials, DIG Saharanpur Raghubir Lal, yesterday said that the directions of the apex court should be imposed immediately and the absconding accused should be arrested at the earliest.

Meanwhile, Additional District Magistrate Indermani Tripathi said that the district authorities are also working towards the enforcement of the directions of providing compensation to all rape victims and kin of missing victims.

The Supreme Court had ordered the state government on March 26, to pay compensation of Rs 15 lakh to family members of those who lost their life and Rs 5 lakh to rape victims.

It passed a slew of directions for proper investigation in the cases and directed the government to bring to book all accused irrespective of their caste, religion and political affiliation.

According to SIT sources, more than 800 accused of last year’s Muzaffarnagar riot cases are yet to be arrested despite the fact that court has served arrest warrants against them.

More than 65 people were killed and hundreds injured while over 50,000 were displaced in riots that had erupted in Muzaffarnagar district and spread to adjoining areas in Uttar Pradesh last year.
