Hyderabad, August 03: There is eloquence in the silence that surrounds Rini Roy Chaudhary. The bride to be spreads her hand out to get the mehndi applied, but is unaware of the chatter and laughter that fills a home all set to celebrate a wedding. Rini is hearing-impaired. She will be marrying 25-year-old K Ravi Babu from Hyderabad who, incidentally, too is deaf and mute.
Born to Poornima and KK Roy Chaudhary, who is an assistant general manager with the JSW Ispat Ltd, Rini’s life changed within a month of her birth when, due to a reaction from a medicine administered, she lost her speech and hearing power. But god empowered her with a grit and determination which has helped this 21-year-old girl to surmount her disability and emerge a winner.
A bright student, Rini always stood first in her class right from Std I to X at the Deaf and Dumb School, Shankar Nagar. She also won the Helen Keller award for the best student in school. “Not just academics my daughter was a sportsperson too and won a gold medal at the state-level in volleyball and a silver medal at the national level. She has also won a gold medal in a chess tournament,” informs Poornima.
“After her Std XII exam, we sent her to Hyderabad at the Deaf Enabled Foundation to do different courses specially designed for people like her,” says Roy Chaudhary. After completing her training, the institute employed Rini as a teacher at the institution.
It was here that fate intervened to find a soul mate for the gutsy girl.
The director of the institute, Ramchandra Swami was so impressed with Rini that he decided that she would be the ideal bride for his younger brother, Ravi Babu. The two would often meet at a club which has hearing and speech impaired people as its members.
Ask Rini about how Ravi Babu proposed to her and she replies in sign language, “He told me that he likes me and would like to marry me.” The mother says, “It was Rini who told us about the boy. We agreed as he is qualified with a diploma in architecture and earns a decent salary of more that Rs. 28,000, and capable of looking after our daughter.”
Rini and Ravi Babu are regulars on Facebook and communicate through text messages. “He likes me a lot,” says the bride to be adding, “He has told me so through his messages. I too like him as he has very soft mannerisms and is a good dancer!”
Rini’s elder sister Mahua Ghosh is happy for her. “I am a very ordinary person. She is the extraordinary one. I am sure she will cope very well in this new role too.”
