Diarrhoea death toll climbs to 136 in Nepal

Kathmandu, July 14: The death toll in Nepal”s remote western districts due to the outbreak of diarrhoea has climbed to 136 over the past one month. With six new reported cases of diarrhoea deaths, the toll reached to 108 in the far-west Jajarkot district, while the disease claimed 25 lives in Rukum district, officials said.

Apart from the two most severely hit districts, Dailekh and Surkhet recorded two and one death respectively, they said. In Dolpa, a mountainous district bordering Tibet in north-West Nepal, 25 policemen hit by diarrhoea have been admitted to the hospital.

About 6,000 people have been fallen sick as the epidemic spread in the western Nepal districts. The government has mobilized the army personnel and dispatched medical teams to the affected districts.

Poor sanitation, lack of pure drinking water, absence of medical facilities have been attributed for the epidemic. Earlier, Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal appealed to the international community to provide necessary help to fight the diarrhoea outbreak in the remote mountainous districts of the country.
