Dhoni will surpass Ganguly’s all captaincy records: Sehwag

New Delhi, September 15: Though Virender Sehwag names former skipper Sourav Ganguly as his favourite captain but he believes present captain Mahender Singh Dhoni will surpass Dada’s all captaincy records.

”Saurav is my role model and I have learnt a lot from him,” Sehwag said at the launch function of a book ”Hamare kaptan: Naidu se Dhoni tak” by famous hindi cricket writer Suryaprakash Chaturvedi, here today.

”Dhoni is also doing good as a captain and the way he has been leading the Indian team he will soon break all the captaincy records of Ganguly,” he added.

Sehwag, who is the vice-captain of Indian team, said he would be happy to captain the Indian team if given chance in future but in the same breath added that team has achieved unprecendented heights during Dhoni tenure as captain and it would be better to we focuss on the present scenario.

On Sachin Tendulkar’s failure as captain he said, ”I did not play under him. I only saw him leading the team on TV and you cannot assess anyone’s skills on TV.” He added, ”But if we look at IPL season-III, Sachin’s leadership was brilliant and the led the team to the final. Despite being injured he played in the final and became an example for everyone.” Praising the book, the Nawab of Najafgarh said he will share the information provided in the book with all his teammates and even gift the book to Dhoni.

He rejected the general perception that cricket has been undergoing tremendous change and opined that only mindset has changed. ”Earlier, it was difficult to chase a score of 200-250 but now 300-350 can be chased easily.” Tipping Test cricket as the highest level of cricket, the Multan ka Sultan said there was no abatement in the excitement of longest format of the game and players class should be judged on the basis of his success in Tests.
