Kanpur, Oct.10 : Indian limited-overs captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has played down Ajinkya Rahane’s chance of making into the playing XI in the five-match ODI series against South Africa, which starts in Kanpur on Sunday.
“It is slightly difficult for him as of now especially if I am looking for somebody to bat number 5, 6 and 7. I don’t think he is the person who should bat at those numbers. I think his strength is more top of the order. If given a chance we will try to feature him in the top three. But if not then he will find it difficult to feature,” Dhoni said of Rahane, who usually bats at the number-four position, ahead of the first ODI.
The 34-year-old captain, who had earlier expressed his intention to bat at number four, suggested that Rahane should bat more up the order especially considering the fact that he had struggled while batting down the line in the last few series.
“Opening is a slot that fits him really well. He is more flamboyant and free when he bats up the order and once he gets the good start he can capitalize in the middle overs also,” he added.
India will look to make a strong comeback in the ODIs after suffering 0-2 defeat in the just concluded T20 series. (ANI)
