Dhaka sees heaviest rain in 53 years

Dhaka, July 29: Bangladesh has been battered by its heaviest rain storms in 53 years, leaving at least six people dead and stranding thousands in their swamped homes.

Six persons, including two children, were drowned or electrocuted as power lines snapped in the capital Dhaka, an overcrowded city of about 10 million, on Tuesday.

The Weather Bureau reported 13 inches (33.3 cms) of rain fell in 12 hours in Dhaka, the highest amount in a single day since 1956.

People waded their way home in waist-deep water or waited for hours to get transport. Residents in low-lying areas were stranded in their homes, the private television station reported.

Meanwhile, rising flood waters and landslides triggered by monsoon rains killed 12 people in Nepal, a senior Home Ministry official said.

Also, at least 22 people have been killed and 38 injured by flooding in China’s Sichuan Province as days of heavy rain in the mountainous region triggered mudflows which swept through villages and cut off the main road to Tibet.

In addition, parts of eastern Turkey are experiencing the worst flooding in 60 years.
