Deteriorating economy has worsened livelihood of people: CPI (M)

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Monday criticised the one-year rule of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre, alleging that the deteriorating economy has worsened the livelihood of the people.

The party further accused the government of failing to deliver on the election promises made to the people.

“Most of the promises they made to the people during the election campaign, none of them have actually been realised. On the contrary, the livelihood conditions of the vast majority of our people are deteriorating because of the constant economic burdens that are being mounted on them. The price rise continues. The international oil prices have fallen very drastically. But the prices in India continue to be high,” CPI (M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury said.

Yechury further said that growing unemployment in the country, combined with price rise of food articles and essential commodities, were putting ‘tremendous pressure’ on the people.

“If you go to the fundamentals of the economy, you find that things are either stagnating, if not declining. This is true of all the three major sectors of the economy – industry, agriculture and services. From the government’s own statistics, we can see that the level of investment and the level of consumption in the country are stagnant,” he said.
