New Delhi: Ruling BJP will do whatever it takes to pass the Citizenship Bill in this Parliament session despite all the protests in the northeast said a BJP leader this Thursday.
Despite all the objections, protests against the Bill, the government is keen to pass the proposed legislation after it made it through the winter bill with NDA’s overwhelming majority in Lok Sabha that aims to prevent demographic changes across the country, ET reports.
The ruling BJP failed to reach a consensus with the Congress’s MPs on the bill after it was pushed through a Joint Committee of Parliament.
Only three days left for legislative business in session that ends on February 13, the government intends to pass the bill in these three days as the remaining days will be kept for President’s address, interim budget presentation and discussions on them.
“There are three ordinances, including one on triple talaq, which will have to be replaced by bills. The government will reach out to opposition for its cooperation,” MoS for parliamentary affairs Vijay Goel told ET.
Apart from the above bills, Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, the Companies (Amendment) Bill and the Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Bill are also slated to be passed to replace ordinances.
BJP believes Assam is in support of the proposed Bill despite few people opposing the bill.
The bill intends to ban Muslims from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh from Indian citizenship, while those from other faiths and religions would be eligible for it after residing six years in India.
