Despite HC orders JNU refused my PhD thesis, alleges Umar Khalid

New Delhi: Jawaharlal Nehru University is once again in the news for all the wrong reasons, this time despite the Delhi high court directing it not to take any coercive action against Umar Khalid, whose rustication had been ordered by a university panel in connection with the 2016 event on the campus, the university has allegedly refused to accept his PhD thesis.

The Delhi High Court restrained Jawaharlal Nehru University from taking any coercive steps against student leader Umar Khalid till Friday, reported IANS. Justice Siddharth Mridul heard the matter. The varsity had penalised Khalid and former president of JNU Students’ Union Kanhaiya Kumar for their involvement at an event to commemmorate the death anniversary of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru in February 2016, during which several students were accused of shouting “anti-national slogans”.

The court also issued a notice to the varsity seeking a response on Khalid’s plea and listed the matter for further hearing on Friday. Khalid had moved the High Court challenging a high-level committee’s decision to uphold his rustication and a fine imposed on him.

The high-level inquiry committee of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Thursday upheld Umar Khalid’s rustication and a fine of Rs 10,000 imposed on Kanhaiya Kumar for raising anti-national slogans raised inside college premises in February 2016.

The JNU panel had in 2016 recommended rustication of Khalid and two other students, and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on Kumar, the then students’ union president, in connection with the campus event against Afzal Guru’s hanging, which allegedly saw anti-national slogans being raised.

The five-member panel had also imposed a financial penalty on 13 other students for violation of disciplinary norms. Later, the students later moved to Delhi High Court to seek directions against the decision of the Appellate Authority of JNU with regards to the rustication and fines imposed on Khalid and Kumar.
