Deputy Mayor expelled from Congress

Shimla, December 10: The Himachal Pradesh unit of the Congress today expelled Shimla Municipal Corporation Deputy Mayor Harish Janartha from the party for ”anti-party” activities.

State Congress president Kaul Singh Thakur told reporters here that state-level disciplinary committee decided to expel Mr Janartha for six years for his anti-party activities during the election of deputy mayor. He said Mr Janartha had contested the election against the partys official candidate Sudhir Azad.

Mr Janartha was re-elected as the deputy mayor for a second term.

He would continue as deputy mayor as his expulsion from the Congress had nothing to do with the functioning of the corporation, he said.

The Congress has also expelled councillor Seema Chauhan from the party for contesting the election of Mayor against party official candidate Madhu Sood. In the House, the Congress has 15 councillors, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) have eight and two councillors respectively.
