Committee for the release of political prisoners organized a national convention on the occasion of International Human Rights Day.
The speakers on this occasion demanded the Govt. to release political prisoners and also to withdraw cruel laws.
Mr. Syed Abdur Rahman Gilani, Justice B.Sudershan Reddy, Prof. Haragopal, Mr. P. Venkateshwara Rao, Prof. Jagmohan, Mr. Lateef Mohammed Khan, Prof. Rehana Sultana, Mr. Varavara rao and other human rights activits attended the convention.
Addressing the convention, justice B. Sudershan Reddy said that attempts for the release of political prisoners are inevitable because most of them are imprisoned on political differences and lack of compatibility of thoughts. He told that so long as the charges leveled against them are not proved, keeping them imprisoned tantamount to violation of human rights.
Justice Sudershan Reddy further told that there is a need to discuss this issue openly.
Lawyers and their fraternity should form part of these open discussions to ensure the release of persons who are in prison for a long time. He told that those who criticize the Govt. and expose its irregularities are imprisoned which is not correct. Many such incidents have come to our notice.
Prof. Haragopal in his address told that Govt. should concentrate on basis issues because it is not enough to hang someone for getting the solution of basic problems. He said that there is a need for preparing a platform, which could prove efficient to struggle for this cause continuously. Prof. Haragopal pointed out that America is governing us these days. We are accepting every proposal of America. We are not dare enough to ask, “Who is America which is dominating us?”
Prof. Rehana Sultana said that democracy is being ridiculed in India and all of us are sitting like silent spectators. She raised the issue of former constable Abdul Quadeer and said that no know worried everything has changed. He has completed his term of imprisonment. He is about his health. Despite this he is forced to lead imprisoned life.
Mr. Lateef Khan demanded to abolish UAPA. He also said that during UPA regime, Muslims are being harassed under the pretext of terrorism.
Mr. P. Venkateshwara Rao said that Human Rights are being usurped at international level on a large scale in most of the democratic countries, which is a very serious issue. He said that public, political parties and human rights organizations should struggle jointly so that the release of political prisoners is ensured.
