Demand for old newspapers on the rise with the ban on plastic bags

Hyderabad, August 3: As the ban is imposed by Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation on plastic bags of less than 40 microns, while the shop owners and manufacturers of polythene bags on one side face a tough time, at the same time the common man has heaved a sigh of relief. At one end where environmental protection is ensured there is an increase in cost of old newspapers and magazines on the other. Today the old newspapers are sold at a cost of 10 to 12 rupees per kg in Hyderabad, while earlier the same was used to be sold at 6 to 8 rupees per kg. Following the ban on plastic bags and the bags made of more than 40 microns are costlier the footpath vendors are preferring bags made of old papers.

The old newspapers and magazine seller Mohan says that three months ago he sold old papers at a cost of Rs 5 to 6 per kg but recently he has sold it at a cost of Rs 10 per kg.
