Demand growing for logistics experts

Hyderabad, November 15: From real estate companies to electronic goods manufacturers and from agri-business entrepreneurs to software firms, businessmen are always forced to pause in their work to take care of availability of stock, transportation and storage, supply of raw materials and similar issues. To those who do not want to be bogged down by these things, professionals in logistics and supply chain management can come in handy.

Considered to be a sunrise field, logistics and supply chain management is growing rapidly with a huge job potential.

Logistics managers play a key role in ensuring that there is no glitch in the entire process of supply of raw material to transportation of the end product to the customers based on the requirement of the companies.

For instance, software companies need not worry about requirement of computers or chairs. For such matters are either dealt with by the company’s logistics manager or outsourced to a logistics consultant. “It is a challenging and responsible job for business managers.

One has to be thoroughly acquainted with the entire process to meet the needs. Though it was earlier considered as a meagre job, the opportunities are slowly increasing due to globalisation. Hence, professionally trained logistics managers are much in demand, particularly in the manufacturing and transportation sectors,” says N Satyakirti, a logistics manager working in an IT MNC in the city.

Logistics management has been part of MBA curriculum for the past few years but is slowly developing into a specialised course. “The pay packets at Rs 3.5 lakh to Rs 4 lakh per annum are very attractive for fresh graduates,” says V Krishna Kumar, director of Gitam School of International Business which is offering a two-year MBA in Global Logistics and Supply Chain Management. University of Hyderabad, IIT-Delhi and the CII Institute of Logistics, Chennai, also offier the course.
