Delhi women’s helpline restarts after disruption

After a 12 hour disruption, the Delhi government’s 181 helpline for women in distress resumed functioning early Thursday, an official said.

The service was disrupted due to damage to underground telephone cables near the Income Tax Office in central Delhi.

“The helpline is up and running since 5 a.m. today (Thursday). The underground telephone line was damaged Wednesday around 6 p.m. due to which services of the helpline were affected,” said a Delhi government official.

The helpline, which operates from Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit’s office at Delhi Secretariat, was set up in the wake of public outcry over the Dec 16, 2012 gang-rape in the capital.
