Delhi woman commits suicide over dowry harassment

New Delhi: A 19-year-old woman committed suicide at her house in Bharat Nagar area here over dowry harassment, the Delhi Police said on Thursday.

The woman, identified as Shivangi, got married to Vipin Sagar who works as a singer two months ago.

Both Vipin and Shivangi were neighbours and stayed in Wazirpur JJ Colony in Bharat Nagar, North West district, a police officer said.

He said a suicide note was found, in which the young woman said he was hassment by her in-laws for dowry.

Shivangi was found hanging from a ceiling fan by her mother around 9 p.m. on Wednesday, the police officer said.

She immediately informed her husband who made a call to the police. Shivangi was then taken to a nearby hospital where the doctors declared her dead on arrival.

“After marriage, Shivangi was being pressurised by her in-laws for more dowry. Unable to bear the torture any longer, she started staying over with her parents,” the police officer said.

“We have registered a case under Section 498-A (Husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) and 304B (Dowry death) of the Indian Penal Code at the Bharat Nagar police station. Arrests are to be made soon in the case,” the police officer said.

Vipin is the brother of “Sa Re Ga Ma Pa” show contestant Tarun Sagar, the officer said.
