Delhi students bag top 2 positions in law entrance

New Delhi, June 17: Two Delhi students Nidhi Modani and Rajat Gangwar have secured the first and second position, respectively, in the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) 2009, the results of which were declared on Monday.

Conducted by the Nalsar University of Law, Hyderabad, the exam saw 12,282 candidates competing for 1,150 seats across 11 universities in the country. Siddhartha Basu of Lucknow has secured the third position.

While all the three toppers secured 175 marks out of 200, the CLAT committee has placed Modani at rank one, followed by Gangwar and Basu. Terming the outcome as a pleasant surprise, Modani, who passed her class XII from Apeejay Noida in commerce stream, said:

“I didn’t really expect to come out as the topper although I performed well in the test. I started preparing immediately after the boards and I literally worked day and night for two months.” And now, Modani is planning to pursue five-year integrated BA, LLB (Hons) course at National Law School of India University (NLSU), Bangalore.

Another topper eyeing NLSU, Bangalore is Basu, who cleared the exam in his second attempt. An elated Basu, a student from St Francis College, Lucknow, said.

“Although, I didn’t expect to come on top, but I really worked hard as my family was disappointed after I couldn’t make the grades last year. My family is very happy at the results.” Basu, after his degree in law will try civil services exam.

“Hopefully my law degree would come handy as law is an option one can choose for the civil services exam,” said Basu.

The CLAT was rescheduled for May 31 due to “tempering” of the boxes containing the test material. Earlier the test was scheduled for May 17.

While for Modani, the delay was a setback to her preparation, for Basu it was a time well used to plug the weaknesses and do some `smart study’.

Basu said: “It came as a blessing in disguise. I worked hard till May 17 and for the next 10 days, I got an opportunity to work on my weaknesses and analyzing the test. It was basically `smart study’ I adopted.
