New Delhi: The Delhi Police on Friday told a court here that Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) leader Kanhaiya Kumar and two others had cooperated in the probe in a sedition case. The police did not oppose the bail application of the students.
Additional Sessions Judge Reetesh Singh set August 27 for passing the order on the bail plea of the students.
Special Public Prosecutor Rajiv Mohan told the court that if the accused are granted bail, then certain conditions should be imposed as the investigation is currently on.
He also informed the court that the accused students did not violate any condition of the interim bail.
The Delhi High Court last week had asked Kanhaiya Kumar to approach the sessions court with his bail application.
Kumar then moved the sessions court seeking regular bail as his six-month interim bail is scheduled to expire on September 1.
Two other JNU students, Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya, also have sought bail.
In his bail application, Kumar has assured that he will adhere to every condition imposed by the court, and that he has not violated any of the conditions that were imposed by the Delhi High Court while granting him interim bail on March 2.
While granting the interim bail, the high court had warned Kumar against participating “actively or passively in any activity which may be termed as anti-national”.
Kumar was arrested on the charge of sedition for taking part in a controversial event on Kashmir held on the university campus on February 9.
In his fresh bail plea, Kumar has stated that he had fully cooperated with the Delhi Police in investigation and joined the probe whenever required. Kumar also maintained that he did not interfere in the ongoing probe.
He also mentioned that he provided password of his mobile phone to the Delhi Police when it asked for it.
Kumar’s bail plea was filed by advocate Sushil Bajaj, who said the student leader deserves a regular bail because so far the Delhi Police has not filed any chargesheet in the case.
