Delhi Police constable arrested for raping a widow

A 28-year-old Delhi Police constable has been arrested for allegedly raping a widow, police said on Thursday.

Mithun, who hails from Bihar, was arrested on Thursday morning after the woman lodged a complaint against him at Sultanpuri police station in north Delhi. The woman complained to police that the constable would often pass lewd comments and misbehave with her. She also claimed that the constable had molested her on several occasions.

“According to the woman, when she objected to his behaviour, he threatened to kill her. All this was going on since a long time but the woman did not tell anyone until the constable came to her house and misbehaved with her,” said a police officer citing her complaint.

Police said the constable went to the woman’s house and allegedly molested her, and when she resisted, he threatened and raped her.

According to senior police officials, the woman was staying at the house of Mithun’s brother for the past few months and Mithun allegedly developed a physical relationship with her, after promising to marry her. But when he refused to marry her, the woman approached police and filed a complaint against him.

On Wednesday, the constable went to the woman’s house and allegedly molested her, and when she resisted, he threatened and raped her. A medical examination at Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital confirmed rape. A case has been registered against the constable.

He was presented before a court, which sent him to 14 days’ judicial custody, the officer added.
