Delhi: Municipal workers call off strike, begin clearing garbage

After calling of their strike, sanitation workers employed by the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) started cleaning the garbage piled on streets of Delhi on Friday evening.

“We have started our work. Garbage will be cleared in the next four to five days,” said Suraj, an MCD worker.

“Today at 5:00 p.m. the strike was called off. We have been here since that time. If they do not give us our salary, the strike will be called again,” said Ramesh, another MCD worker.

The workers had gone on strike after the East Delhi Municipal Corporation failed to pay their salaries for the third month running, citing paucity of funds.

The resultant mess had led to enormous piles of garbage littering East Delhi’s streets. (ANI)
