Delhi Govt sanctions funds for liver hospital

New Delhi, January 18: The Delhi Government today sanctioned Rs 272 crore for second-stage development of the new multi-speciality hospital for liver and biliary diseases here, which will soon become a deemed university.

The University Grants Commission has accepted the NCT government’s proposal of making the ‘Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences’ a deemed university, Delhi Health Minister Kiran Walia told reporters after a cabinet meeting.

The government has sanctioned Rs 272 crore for second stage expansion of the institute which would include new facilities, new departments and better infrastructure, she said.

The institute has been set up under the guidance of eminent herpetologist Dr S K Sarin.

The 155-bed Institute, which was inaugurated by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit last week, will cater exclusively to patients with liver diseases which are on the rise because of changing lifestyle and an increase in liquor consumption.
