New Delhi, July 15: The Delhi government has decided to build temporary shelters for migrant labourers who are here to sustain the sudden rush in construction projects in the Capital.
While the scheme got the Delhi Cabinet’s nod last September, the government so far has identified four sites for these temporary shelters, also known as “holdings”. These will come up at Jhatikara, Aya Nagar and Dera Mandi in South Delhi and one at the Saddatpur Musalman area, East Delhi.
These mini settlements are expected to accommodate 6,000 workers in each. They will have basic amenities like water and power, a community kitchen, a crèche, a medical centre, a vocational training centre and a dedicated transport system to ferry workers to construction sites.
The government has also asked DIMTS — a special-purpose vehicle created by it to implement multi-modal transport schemes — to conduct a feasibility study on the proposal to create such “holding areas”, a Labour department official said.
The official said: “We need to check if the land chosen for these settlements are viable for construction, or whether we can provide these areas civic amenities like water and power. DIMTS has expertise in such projects. That is why we have asked the agency to draw up the first blueprint.”
The project will be funded by the Labour Welfare Board set up by the government. Also utilised in this project will be the Rs 100 crore that the government has collected as development cess from construction agencies like the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation and the Public Works Department.
