New Delhi, March 10: Delhi Police Wednesday released the sketch of a man who allegedly stalked a second year Delhi University student and shot her dead near her south Delhi college in broad daylight Tuesday. The police also said that even though the crime scene was buzzing with students and office-goers, no eyewitness had come forward.
‘It is very unfortunate that no one has come forward and informed police that they have witnessed the incident,’ Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) H.G.S. Dhaliwal told reporters.
‘Although many were present at the time, they have denied that they saw the assailant. The assailant had centre parting and was wearing a black shirt. The sketch is pretty approximate as no one has a clear picture,’ he said.
Radhika Tanwar, 20, a resident of Naraina area in west Delhi, was a student of Ram Lal Anand College, located in Shantiniketan, south Delhi.
According to police, she was crossing a foot over bridge near Dhaula Kuan when suddenly a man shot her from the back and disappeared into the crowd.
‘The assailant knew Tanwar well and had been observing her schedule, including the bus which she boarded every morning to reach her college and he keenly followed her,’ said Dhaliwal.
He also said that the stalker very carefully chose the foot overbridge to shoot Radhika keeping in mind the high vehicular noise and crowd during the morning rush hour.
When reporters asked why police has not been able to nab the assailant on the basis of information provided by one of Radhika’s friends who was accompanying her, Dhaliwal said: ‘No friend was accompanying her.’
‘Whoever, whether it is friends or eyewitnesses, has any information about the assailant, can approach us without any hesitation and give the information… the identity of the person giving information will be kept secret,’ he said.
Police also said that a .315 bore country-made pistol was used by the assailant and a detailed report was being prepared by the forensic department.
When asked about the possibility of a love angle behind the murder, he said: ‘We really cannot confirm but it can’t be denied that some one might have had an obsession.’
However, police denied any intention of robbery as Radhika’s belongings were untouched.
‘There might have been some personal issue which Radhika had revealed only to her closed friends and family members. We are trying to find that out in our investigations,’ he added.
Meanwhile, hundreds of students from various colleges in Delhi University’s South Campus Wednesday held a rally at Dhaula Kuan to protest against the murder of their fellow student. They demanded swift action against the murderer and shouted slogans against the Delhi Police.
Joint secretary of the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) Akshay Kumar said: ‘The murders are being committed in broad daylight and the police do little about it. The guilty persons should be brought to book.’
The students also demanded an exclusive ladies police station at south campus area.
Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit also met Radhika’s parents and condoled her death and assured them of justice.
