Delhi to crackdown on food adulterators

New Delhi, May 11: Anyone causing death from adulterated food in the Indian capital can be sentenced to life imprisonment, Delhi’s Health Minister A.K. Walia said Wednesday.Walia said that the government was all set to implement the new Food Safety and Standards Act within the next three months.

In case of selling unsafe food which may be injurious to health, the culprit could be imprisoned for up to seven years and fined Rs.10 lakh.

If adulterated food caused death, the punishment ranges from seven years to a maximum of life imprisonment and fine of upto Rs.10 lakh, Walia said.

Last month, in raids conducted in markets spread across the city, 264 food samples were seized, of which 40 were found to be adulterated and four unbranded.

“About 32 samples of spices, 31 of milk products, 22 each of pulses, cereals and milk, 18 of edible oil and 17 samples from eateries were seized,” said Walia.
