Delhi building collapse: Owner arrested

New Delhi, November 16: The owner of an east Delhi building which collapsed killing over 60 people was arrested on Tuesday evening and a case registered against him.

Amrit Pal Singh was arrested from the Geeta Colony area of the Capital. He was on the run since the incident occurred last evening.

Police said his mobile phone was being tracked.

Police have registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder against him at the Shakarpur police station.

A senior police official said the case has been registered under section 304 of Indian Penal Code.

Singh fled along with his family soon after the four-storey building which had been rented out to migrant labourers collapsed at Lalita Park in east Delhi’s Lakshmi Nagar.

Singh is a history sheeter with his name being included in Delhi police’s ‘bad characters’ list. He has a criminal record which goes back 31 years.

Various cases are registered against him for a range offences throughout Delhi including at Kalyanpuri, Daryaganj, Gandhi Nagar etc.

He has been in the construction business with his two brothers.<>br
Police will probe the nexus between contractors, MCD officials and police which led to the illegal construction.

The 15-year-old building, where an illegal fifth floor was being constructed, came crashing down around 8.15 PM yesterday.
