Delhi: Auto driver Jahangir stab to death over night charge

NEW DELHI: Four juveniles allegedly stabbed a 26-year-old auto driver to death for demanding additional night charges in the fare.

According to media reports, the incident took place at Kasturba Gandhi Marg on late Sunday evening when the four boys between the ages of 16 and the 18 hailed Jahangir Alam’s rickshaw at Khan Market to go to Connaught Place.

“On the way they had a disagreement with the driver on the issue of extra charges applied to the fare for night time and for the fourth passenger,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Madhur Verma said, adding that one of them stabbed Alam during the scuffle.

At 11.30 p.m., a police motorcyclist found Alam in an injured condition at Kasturba Gandhi Marg.

Jahangir was rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in a police vehicle, where he succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment.

“Simultaneously, we received a call saying that the culprit has been caught by the public,” the officer said.

Kartik, 19, was handed over to the police. “A blood-stained knife was recovered from his possession by the public.”

Two more boys have also been arrested in the incident.

A case has been registered against the accused under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

Jahangir, a native of Malda, West Bengal stayed with his uncle at Jamia Nagar. He is survived by his wife and four children who live in Malda.
