Soon after Lt Governor Najeeb Jung’s office released an official statement saying that all parties in the state had expressed their inability to form government, Election Commission sources said on Monday that Delhi Assembly polls are likely to be held in the month of February next year.
According to news reports, after meeting a delegation of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) led by Arvind Kejriwal the LG’s office released a statement saying – “Delhi headed for fresh election as all parties express inability to form government.”
“The Lt Governor would be sending his report to the Hon’ble President,” the statement added.
Apart from AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia, Satish Upadhyay and Jagdish Mukhi of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Haroon Yusuf of Indian National Congress (Congress) met the Lt Governor at the Raj Niwas here today.
The LG met all the three party leaders separately.
After which a Raj Niwas release said, “All the above parties expressed their inability to form the government. The Lt Governor would be sending his report to the Hon’ble President,” ANI reported.
The release was issued soon after the Lt Governor held consultations with leaders of BJP, Congress and AAP to explore possibility of government formation in the national capital.
With the BJP, AAP and Congress expressing themselves against formation of a new government and seeking a fresh mandate to end the eight-month-long political uncertainty, there was no other option left other that holding fresh elections in Delhi.
As soon as Lt Governor Najeeb Jung, who met leaders of the three political parties, sends his recommendation to the President, the state Assembly would be dissolved at any time, reports said.
While BJP declined the LG’s offer to form a government, AAP and Congress made it clear that they were in favour of immediate elections.
