New Delhi, July 28: A delegation of Congress MPs from Uttar Pradesh today met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to press for speedy developmental work in the state and greater involvement of elected representatives in the projects and schemes. A memorandum submitted to the PM said there are “serious difficulties” faced by MPs and MLAs of Congress in the state in development efforts.
Taking a dig at the BSP government in the state, the memorandum said “blatant defiance” of the spirit of the Constitution by regional parties “deprive the elected representatives of the opportunity to effectively intervene on behalf of their constituencies in developmental issues and projects”. The memorandum wanted the PM to examine whether funding schemes of the central government can partly be designed as central sector scheme (for direct funding) as against being entirely centrally-sponsored scheme (like NREGA).
It also wanted empowerment of MPs in proposals under various ministries for the state and selection of NGOs for carrying out the schemes of various ministries. The delegation comprised AICC General Secretary in-charge of the state Digvijay Singh, Union Ministers Salman Khursheed and RPN Singh, party MPs Annu Tandon, Kamal Kishore, Ratna Singh, Jagdambika Pal, CLP leader Pramod Tiwari among others.
