In Dehradun, CID starts probe, registers case of murder against 14 cops

New Delhi, July 08: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Uttarakhand Police began its investigation into the encounter of a 24-year-old from Ghaziabad by registering a case of murder against Dehradun police personnel involved in the incident.

The case was registered against 14 police personnel at Raipur police station here late Monday night on the basis of a complaint filed by the victim’s father Ravinder Singh, Dehradun’s new Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Abhinav Kumar said today. The policemen have also been charged with rioting and criminal intimidation.

A resident of Indirapuram in NCR, Ranbir Singh was gunned down by the police on Friday night, claiming that he had snatched the revolver of a sub-inspector and fled. The police also claimed Ranbir and two other youths accompanying him had opened fire at the police team chasing them.

But calling it a fake encounter, the youth’s family has demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The CID team, probing the case, is led by Assistant Superintendent of Police Vimla Gunjyal. She said, “We are collecting documents relating to the case and will visit the encounter site soon. We will also talk to eyewitnesses.”

The CID team also inspected the motorbike recovered from the spot — the police claim Ranbir and two others with him were trying to escape on it. The police say it is a stolen bike and belongs to a resident of Ahir village in Panipat, Haryana.

SSP Kumar said, “We will facilitate CID in its probe by providing all documents.”
