Deepa Mehta’s inputs were invaluable: Ritu Kumar

Fashion designer Ritu Kumar says filmmaker Deepa Mehta’s inputs for costume designs for wedding sequences in “Midnight’s Children” came to her aid in a big way.

“Deepa has helped in the costume department and provided inputs on how the designs should be. Deepa and I sat to discuss about costumes where she gave her invaluable inputs which were greatly helpful,” said the veteran designer.

Though Kumar is known for her wedding couture lines, this is not her first movie work.

She has earlier designed for films like “Love Breakups Zindagi” and styled Freida Pinto for few of her scenes in “Slumdog Millionaire”.

“Midnight’s Children” recently premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and will premiere at the Vancouver Film Festival Sep 27.

Terence Lewis doesn’t want to choreograph Bollywood numbers anymore as he feels the true essence of dance is getting lost in films nowadays.

Lewis has earlier choreographed in films like “Lagaan”. But now he feels “there’s no need for a choreographer”.

“The cameraman is enough. The heroines know what to do. The cameraman and editors dance more, the actors hardly do anything. After DID (reality show ‘Dance India Dance’), I can’t go back to doing films,” said Lewis, who is a judge on the show.

He feels choreographing for films is a “huge compromise”.

“In the olden days, actors used to come and rehearse and there used to be long shots. Now there is nothing like that. I respect all the choreographers, but it’s all like a music video for me,” he said.

Isabelle Adjani came after doing her homework: Prem Raj

French actress Isabelle Adjani is set to make her Bollywood debut with “Ishkq In Paris”, and the film’s director Prem Raj says she came fully prepared, despite not knowing the Hindi language.

“The biggest thing for her (Adjani) was to learn Hindi. I was amazed. She came after doing her homework. She just said that if ‘I mess up the accent, then handle that because I don’t know that’,” said Raj.

The director says this dedication is the reason why actors command respect.

“Ishkq In Paris”, actress Preity Zinta’s debut film production, will be premiered in Paris.

“There is a lot of buzz in France. It is necessary that we should have the premiere there. It is a big step for Isabelle. She is coming in a Hindi film for the first time and is speaking Hindi. Her role is very big and it’s not a cameo,” he said.

Adjani, 57, is a two time Academy Award nominated actress.
