Deep depression crosses Orissa coast

Bhubaneswar, September 05: The deep depression formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal crossed the Orissa coast Saturday evening and moved toward West Bengal, weather officials said.

“The deep depression has moved in a northerly direction and lay centered at about 50 km north of Digha (in West Bengal),” the Bhubaneswar meteorological centre said.

“The system is likely to move further in a northwesterly direction. Under its influence thundershowers are likely to occur at most places over Orissa,” it said.

The meteorological office has also asked all state ports to host local cautionary signal number three and issued an advisory for fishermen asking them not to venture into the sea as the conditions remained rough to very rough.

It said squall-like winds from a westerly direction with speeds reaching 55-65 kmph and going up to 75 kmph are likely to prevail along and off the north Orissa coast and 45-55kmph, going up to 65kmph, over the south Orissa coast Sunday.

Heavy to very heavy rain is likely at a few places and extremely heavy rainfall (up to 25cms) at isolated places over north Orissa on Sunday and Monday, a bulletin said.
