The death toll due to severe heat wave sweeping Andhra Pradesh crossed the 1000-mark on Wednesday with the scorching mercury claiming 168 more lives in the state in the last 24 hours, officials said.
“As per information available till 8 pm, the toll has reached 1,020,” officials of the State Disaster Management Department told a news agency here.
According to officials, the toll for Prakasam district is the highest–202.
The toll since May 18, available till 8 pm tonight, are: Guntur (168), followed by Visakhapatnam (123), Vizianagaram (102) and Nellore (89).
The death toll in other districts so far is: East Godavari (107), West Godavari (13), Krishna (49), Chittoor (38), Kadapa (32), Kurnool and Anantapur districts 24 each and Srikakulam (49).
According to the MeT department, the severe heat wave to heatwave conditions prevailed over many parts in the districts of East Godavari, West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam and Nellore of coastal Andhra Pradesh.
On Tuesday, Jangamaheswarapuram sizzled with the highest temperature at 47 degrees Celsius.
