Death toll in India boat accident rises to 52

Lucknow, June 15: Officials say the death toll from a boat accident in northern India has risen to 52 as rescue workers continued to recover bodies.

The crowded vessel capsized on the Ganges river Monday. Magistrate P.K. Misra says the boat was carrying at least 100 people, most of them women and children. The load was well above its capacity of about 30 people.

Surendra Srivastava, a state police spokesman, says rescue workers have pulled out 52 bodies as of Tuesday morning.

The accident took place in Ballia district in Uttar Pradesh state, 250 miles (400 kilometers) southeast of capital Lucknow.
