Death of 200 cows: Arrested BJP leader blames own government

RAIPUR: Arrested BJP leader blames own government after the death of around 200 cows due starvation and lack proper care and medicine.

According to a report published in The Indian Express, Harish Verma has claimed that his own party’s government has not released the annual grants for maintaining the Gaushala.

He told The Indian Express:

“There are meant to be 220 cows, but there are 600. The government is meant to give me Rs 10 lakh per year to maintain the gaushala. But they have not paid for the past two years.”

Verma, who holds the post of BJP’s vice president in Jamul municipality, has been running the the government-aided gaushala (shelter home) since 2010 was arrested on Friday on the charges of “breach of trust and negligence”.

Initially, he denied the claimed saying  cows died due to collapse of a boundary wall on 15 August due to heavy rains.

Later, when he was charged under sections 4 and 6 and Section 409 of Indian Penal Code (IPC),” he changed his testimony, blaming that he was not receiving the grant from the state’s Gau Sewa Ayog even after repeated requests.

Durg Additional Collector Sanjay Agrawal said, “In the last three days, 27 cows were reported to have died of unknown reasons in the gaushala of Rajpur. Around 500 bovines were housed in the government-aided shelter home.”

There were conflicting reports about number of dead cows.  Congress has, however, alleged that around 300 cows have died of starvation and lack proper care.

Media reports quoted local villagers as saying that the number of dead cows is over 200.

On Friday, hours before his arrest,  the villagers and even workers of the BJP’s yuva morcha raised slogans, calling him a “hatyara (murderer)”. One common refrain was this: “Bhajpa ki naak kata di (He has embarrassed the BJP).”
